Professor Zavala will discuss how official narratives about the drug trade have created a pervasive mythology that dominates in most cultural products about Mexican “narcos”. These narratives ultimately legitimize the violent transnational security policies that have resulted in over 400,000 killings and more than 100,000 forced disappearances since the “drug war” militarization strategy began in 2006.
