Alison Bechdel has recently published her graphic narrative Fun Home: A Family Tragicomedy (2006). Acclaimed by many sources as one of the best books of 2006—it was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist—Fun Home is a coming out story and a family memoir. The title refers to the funeral home that was a family business, while offering an ironic comment on the not-so-fun events that took place there. Engrossing, thoughtful, funny and heartrending, the book has become a runaway hit. The New York Times called it a “pioneering work, pushing two genres (comics and memoir) in multiple new directions.” Bechdel’s long-running comic strip, Dykes to Watch Out For, which has become a countercultural institution since its inception in 1983, is now syndicated in dozens of papers, translated into several languages, collected in a series of award-winning books, and available online.
