Caryl Phillips has published a range of works that includes screenplays, novels, works of non-fiction, documentaries, and plays for the stage, television, and radio. His works have won a number of awards, including the 2004 Commonwealth Writers Prize for A Distant Shore (2003) and the 2006 PEN/Beyond the Margins Award for Dancing in the Dark (2005). His novel, Crossing the River (1993), was shortlisted for the 1993 Booker Prize. His latest book, Foreigners, was published in 2007. Other awards and fellowships Phillips has received include the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, a British Council Fellowship, a Lannan Foundation Fellowship, and Britain’s oldest literary award, the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Phillips is presently a professor of English at Yale University and a regular contributor to The Guardian and The New Republic.
