Summer: Shakespeare in England
The Program
- Witness Shakespeare's work as it was meant to be seen; performances in the Globe Theatre in London and by the Royal Shakespeare Comapny are major parts of this program.
- Learn about the challenges and complexities of Shakespearian production by site visits to some of the United Kingdom's most famous theatres.
- Meet with actors and directors to get a true sense of the Bard's work.

Academics
This course studies the work of England’s greatest dramatist. We will spend two weeks reading plays at Rutgers, and then we move to England to see them performed on the stages of the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare’s Birthplace) and the Globe Theatre and other theaters in London. Attention will be given to Shakespeare’s context and contemporaries, film and stage interpretation, and the challenges of production and performance. While in England, we will see the major theatres and sites associated with Shakespeare and his contemporaries, and study with actors, directors, and scholars associated with the major centers for Shakespearean studies and performance in Stratford-upon-Avon and London.

Summer: Creative Writing in England
The Program
A 21-day intensive-writing program, designed to expose students to the history and literary inspiration of one of England’s most remarkable landscapes. Amble the countryside of southern England, stopping at local places of interest, including the homes of Virginia Woolf and the writing inspiration for Winne the Pooh author, A.A. Milne. Compile written works in a variety of genres into a final portfolio of poems, short fictions, and reflective essays.
Academics
The program will be loosely based on Virginia Woolf’s daily schedule. Each morning will be dedicated to writing. After lunch students will walk (weather permitting) or visit local sites, before returning to base for quiet reading or group discussion of works in progress.
During the program students will also visit local areas of interest. These excursions will include Monk’s House, home of Virginia Woolf; Charleston Farmhouse, home of Vanessa Bell, Virginia’s sister, and a center of the Bloomsbury group. We will also attend a public reading with a celebrated author as part of the Charleston Literary Festival, a trip to the Globe Theatre in London to visit the outdoor market and attend a play, walk the Long Man, explore the seaside and attend a sea shanty singing, take tea and lunch near the Ashdown Forest, and much more. We will hold a reading at the end of the trip, live-streamed via Facebook for family and friends.
