Objet d'Art Arrives, by Yana Zeltser

Rutgers University has long excelled in the strength and variety of its student publications. The Daily Targum, The Anthologist, The Podium, A Posteriori, and Dialogues@RU each contribute a unique voice to the list of literary endeavors. Objet d'Art joined the literary presence on campus in 2002, with the support of its faculty advisor, English Professor Kate Flint.

The magazine promotes the interaction of the literary, artistic, and cultural communities on campus. Rita Banerjee, the editor-in-chief, explains: "The initial aim of Objet d'Art was to revolutionize the creative communities at Rutgers by providing a forum for student artists and writers to interact, inspire, and create."

In addition to publishing works in varied artistic and literary genres, Objet d'Art initiated various projects to strengthen the creative community at Rutgers. The magazine publishes "What's Goin' On," a weekly newsletter that lists the upcoming literary and arts events in New Brunswick area. Objet also sponsors trips to the biannual Geraldine R. Dodge Poetry Festival; the Fall 2002 visit gave Rutgers students a chance to interact with luminaries from the contemporary writing community such as Rita Dove, Robert Hass, Billy Collins, and Rutgers alum Robert Pinsky.

Last year Objet d'Art collaborated with the Zimmerli Art Museum to create the Emerging Poets series, and also with The Anthologist to create the "New Verse" reading series at Barnes and Noble in North Brunswick. Both endeavors showcase the original work of student writers from Rutgers. The Emerging Poets series at the Zimmerli is a part of the "Art after Hours" events that take place on the first Thursdays of selected months. Admission is free for Rutgers faculty, students, and staff. Emerging Poets readings feature poets from the Rutgers community, as well as the tri-state area, giving the audience a chance to hear and discuss the works of local writers.

Objet d'Art's weekly meetings are filled with discussions and lively debate, and new contributors are always welcome. More information, including "What's Goin' On," is on the magazine's website at: www.eden.rutgers.edu/~objet/.
